Our Leadership Pillars

Principles That Guide Our Framework

The 5L Performance Group is founded on 5 Leadership Pillars or Principles:

Love, Listen, Learn, Lead, and Lean.

As a foundation of our Operating System, how we do our work, and the overall mindset of leadership we coach to our clients – These Pillars of Leadership are designed to build trust and open doors in our organizations in order to improve organizational performance and achieve operational excellence.

Love

The foundation of effective leadership is Love. Love is a verb that demonstrates a deep, profound, authentic care for others – our customers, our team-members, our suppliers. Love is also an expression of our commitment to our enterprise – the purpose, the vision, the impact we want to make, how we do our work, and how that is represented in our products and services.

Listen

Ask more than tell – and pause so people can respond. In order for leaders to learn, we need to listen – to our team-members, our customers, and other stakeholders. Leaders cannot possibly know all the answers and solve all the problems. Leaders are also too-far-removed from the current reality of their teams and processes … SO, we need to “Go See” – “Ask Questions” – “Show Respect” in order to truly understand reality and how things are going.

Learn

Through the humble skill of Listening, we will Learn what is really happening, see and understand root causes, and get insights from others on how we might best improve and solve those problems.  Learning is work. It requires that leaders also look at the processes objectively, capture the data, and truly see how processes and team-members are behaving – and why. High-performance teams learn together – so this act is done with the team – they acquire new knowledge together and strive for common understanding.

Lead

Leadership is influence. Once leaders understand current reality, and root causes, and have captured ideas from others, THEN we can set a plan and guide and inspire others towards the desired outcome. The best form of influence is collaboration – where people know how much they are cared for and we’ve been candid about the reality of the current-state and our best ideas to improve. In this space, leaders employ the skills of vision, articulation, persuasion, and exhortation. Vision crafts the plan, articulation communicates the plan, persuasion gets commitment and initiates movement, and exhortation builds momentum.

Lean

Lean is the body of knowledge – tools, methods, principles – and leadership mindsets, behaviors, practices – that allows the enterprise to improve, solve problems and FLOW GREATER VALUE to their customers by minimizing / eliminating waste. Through lean principles and practices, we build an organizational capability for problem solving and achieve true operational excellence.

Reviews from Our Clients

-Rachel Breuer | project manager

Jesse has been a fantastic source of encouragement as we began our lean journey at Cardinal Construction. He was able to provide practical ways for us to implement lean tools specific to our business, as well as support me through the trials and tribulations that inevitably come with leading any new change. Jesse is full of insight and asked great questions that helped guide me along our path of continuous improvement.

Tennille Hutcherson | Independent consultant and brand ambassador

“Jesse is a phenomenal forward-thinking leader, coach, and mentor. He has challenged me to uplevel my goals, take baby steps towards accomplishing each one of them and visualize the manifestation, and release any fear. As a result, I have completed my Masters of Business Administration degree, started a new job, and launched my own organizing business. I will never forget him saying: “Can you see yourself making this amount each month from your business?” While I’m not quite at that amount, I know it’s within reach and will happen! He embodies optimism, servant leadership, and creative coaching methodologies. If you are ready to change your life then seek out his expertise and prepare for the growth and transformation”

Jeff Jewell | Vice President, Union Bank & Trust

“Jesse came to our organization to present an introduction to LEAN to a group of people that had very little understanding of what it meant. Not only was the workshop very informative, but Jesse was also very engaging and made the process enjoyable. The initial session prompted a lot of interest and was a great kick starter to the momentum of our LEAN journey. I would highly recommend working with Jesse!”

Andrew Sherwood | Director, Midland U MBA

“Jesse has worked with Midland University’s MBA program for several years, helping to train professionals in the application of Operational Excellence. These students have gone on to have amazing results implementing the concepts learned in the classroom. Jesse is a highly regarded educator, coach, and friend of the MBA program!”

Matt Singh | CEO/ Owner, MEBE LLC

“Jesse is the ideal transformational leader. He leads continuous improvement initiatives by “seeking to understand”. He fosters an environment in which your team leaves every interaction looking to better understand your business and guides the team to begin forming strong opinions about what better can look like.”

Mark Shoemaker | Conservation Director, PCCB

“Every year the Pottawattamie Conservation team plans for future programs, projects and events. This year we took on a different twist and decided we would incorporate some team building with our annual strategic planning session. Jesse DePriest was awesome, he not only helped us come closer together as a team but used that team development to guide our future direction and planning efforts. Jesse has a great personality that resonated with our team and his knowledge of team dynamics and organizational planning is outstanding.”

QMS Manager

“When I approached Jesse about helping my team perform more effective problem solving, he provided exemplary training and coaching. More importantly, though, he helped participants recognize the importance of understanding our organization, its people, and its goals. With his help, we were able to improve our problem solving methods, but we also began to instill a problem solving culture in the organization.”

Transform Your Team

Eradicate Fear-based Leadership

Fire-Fighting, or fear-based leadership, is rooted in the pressure and anxiety leaders have in pursuing a goal, or trying to ward off a threat. In our fear, without a better way to manage it, we make assumptions, jump to conclusions, and then run off and tell people what to do… oftentimes, angrily, hastily, harshly. This behavior never leads to lasting positive effects. Instead, we need to know ourselves – then listen, learn, and then lead through our purpose, vision, and goals – articulating clearly and kindly, persuading others in ways that respects their view and fears, and then strongly, positively encourages our team members to work WITH US towards advantage. High-performance teams and cultures are built through effective leadership.
