Our Leadership Pillars
Principles That Guide Our Framework
The 5L Performance Group is founded on 5 Leadership Pillars or Principles:
Love, Listen, Learn, Lead, and Lean.
As a foundation of our Operating System, how we do our work, and the overall mindset of leadership we coach to our clients – These Pillars of Leadership are designed to build trust and open doors in our organizations in order to improve organizational performance and achieve operational excellence.
Love
The foundation of effective leadership is Love. Love is a verb that demonstrates a deep, profound, authentic care for others – our customers, our team-members, our suppliers. Love is also an expression of our commitment to our enterprise – the purpose, the vision, the impact we want to make, how we do our work, and how that is represented in our products and services.
Listen
Ask more than tell – and pause so people can respond. In order for leaders to learn, we need to listen – to our team-members, our customers, and other stakeholders. Leaders cannot possibly know all the answers and solve all the problems. Leaders are also too-far-removed from the current reality of their teams and processes … SO, we need to “Go See” – “Ask Questions” – “Show Respect” in order to truly understand reality and how things are going.
Learn
Through the humble skill of Listening, we will Learn what is really happening, see and understand root causes, and get insights from others on how we might best improve and solve those problems. Learning is work. It requires that leaders also look at the processes objectively, capture the data, and truly see how processes and team-members are behaving – and why. High-performance teams learn together – so this act is done with the team – they acquire new knowledge together and strive for common understanding.
Lead
Leadership is influence. Once leaders understand current reality, and root causes, and have captured ideas from others, THEN we can set a plan and guide and inspire others towards the desired outcome. The best form of influence is collaboration – where people know how much they are cared for and we’ve been candid about the reality of the current-state and our best ideas to improve. In this space, leaders employ the skills of vision, articulation, persuasion, and exhortation. Vision crafts the plan, articulation communicates the plan, persuasion gets commitment and initiates movement, and exhortation builds momentum.
Lean
Lean is the body of knowledge – tools, methods, principles – and leadership mindsets, behaviors, practices – that allows the enterprise to improve, solve problems and FLOW GREATER VALUE to their customers by minimizing / eliminating waste. Through lean principles and practices, we build an organizational capability for problem solving and achieve true operational excellence.

Transform Your Team
Eradicate Fear-based Leadership
Fire-Fighting, or fear-based leadership, is rooted in the pressure and anxiety leaders have in pursuing a goal, or trying to ward off a threat. In our fear, without a better way to manage it, we make assumptions, jump to conclusions, and then run off and tell people what to do… oftentimes, angrily, hastily, harshly. This behavior never leads to lasting positive effects. Instead, we need to know ourselves – then listen, learn, and then lead through our purpose, vision, and goals – articulating clearly and kindly, persuading others in ways that respects their view and fears, and then strongly, positively encourages our team members to work WITH US towards advantage. High-performance teams and cultures are built through effective leadership.
